INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY – Oscoda’s Isabelle Schimmer swims the breaststroke during the individual medley during last week’s home meet with Caro.

OSCODA – The end result was a 120 to 61 loss. However, the Oscoda swim and dive team was able to continue its trend of shaving time from its events, as they had more than 15 personal best times during the Independent Swim Conference dual with visiting Caro on Tuesday, Oct. 8.

“We saw 16 personal bests from our meet, overall, we swam hard, even when pushed to try new events,” head coach Ellen Doherty said. “Great sportsmanship was evident in how the swimmers celebrated each other’s accomplishments, regardless of the outcome as far as places and points scored.”

The Owls had a second place start to the night, as in the 200 medley relay a team of Kylie Gallahar, Audrey Klinger, Isabelle Schimmer and Carly Mongeau took second with a time of 2:33.10. Gallahar had a win in the 200 free, as she touched the wall in 2:35.38 and Bailey McCrea was able to take fourth in the same event. In the individual medley Schimmer was second and Hannah Moore placed fourth, with Schimmer’s time reading 3:05.47.

The Owls also had three entries in the 50 free. Their top finisher there was Mongeau, as she timed out at 29.91. Maiya Dettmer and Brooke Swales followed her with fourth and sixth place finishes.

Dettmer added second place points in the diving portion, while in the butterfly it was Ana Jurgens in third with a 1:43.96 and McCrea in fourth with a 1:47.70. The 100 free featured third, fifth and sixth place finishes; with Gallahar (1:08.15), Jurgens and Lynn Maurer taking those spots.

The 500 free had Schimmer take third with a 7:05.72 and Klinger was right behind her in fourth place. The Owls added a second place swim in the 200 free relay, thanks to the efforts of Dettmer, Moore, Jurgens and McCrea, who had a time of 2:23.88.

In the backstroke Maurer placed fourth when she touched the wall at 2:05.08 and Swales finished fifth in the same event. Oscoda had two teams in the final event, the 400 free relay. Taking second was Mongeau, Klinger, Schimmer and Gallahar on a time of 5:07.41 and in third was the team of Dettmer, Jurgens, Moore and McCrea.

“The girls showcased their personal determination and the camaraderie that defines our team,” Doherty said. “We are working towards our team goal of improving from last year’s ISC standings. Hard work and dedication will get us there.”

Oscoda had a home dual with Alma on Tuesday and they’ll also host John Glenn in another dual on Tuesday, Oct. 22. Oct. 29 will feature a road dual at Ogemaw Heights and they’ll wrap up the season at the ISC championship meet Nov. 8 and 9 at Saginaw Valley State University.
